As part of Action for Brain Injury (ABI) Week, we are highlighting the often unseen struggles of living with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
At Hatch Brenner, we are often involved in the early stages of the recovery journey. These effects are often new, and part of our role is to offer support where we can during our involvement in the claims process.
For Sophie, life changed after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) sustained in a car accident. Though labelled “mild,” the effects are anything but. On a good day, she can manage simple routines—prepare meals, hold conversations, even enjoy a walk. Her thinking is clearer, her balance steadier, and her energy levels just enough to feel like herself again. But these days are delicate; one misstep can tip the balance.
A bad day is a different story. Fatigue becomes overwhelming, noise and light unbearable. Words slip away mid-sentence, and thoughts jumble into confusion. Even short tasks, like replying to emails, feel monumental. Emotional sensitivity rises, and anxiety creeps in. The isolation of these days can be as heavy as the symptoms themselves.
Worst of all is the “payback.” When Sophie pushes through on a good day—socialising too long or working past her limit—the aftereffects hit hard. A single active day can lead to days of cognitive fog, headaches, and exhaustion. Recovery becomes a cycle of progress and setback.
Sophie’s story shows that mTBI is not always visible—but its impact is deeply felt, requiring constant self-awareness, pacing, and resilience to manage each day.
This is an all-too-familiar story at Hatch Brenner. As part of our role in the claims process, we can assist in obtaining, arranging and coordinating rehabilitation services, signposting to additional support, and offering an empathetic and reassuring ear during what can be a frightening and difficult time.
