Sarcoma Awareness Month: What You Need to Know About This Rare Cancer

When we hear the word cancer, we often think of

When we hear the word cancer, we often think of it as one condition. In reality, there are many different types of cancer, each with its own symptoms, treatments and outcomes.

This Sarcoma Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on sarcoma a rare and often aggressive cancer that affects the body’s bones and soft tissues. Because it is less common than many other cancers, awareness remains low. According to the National Sarcoma Survey 2025, only 25% of people over 16 had heard of sarcoma before receiving their diagnosis.

Three Common Myths About Sarcoma
Myth 1: Sarcoma only affects older people

Not true. Sarcoma can affect anyone, including children, teenagers and young adults. Research shows younger people are often more likely to have multiple medical appointments before being referred for further tests.

Myth 2: Sarcoma is untreatable

Treatment options have advanced significantly in recent years. Depending on the type and stage of sarcoma, patients may benefit from surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapies, often delivered by specialist teams.

Myth 3: A painless lump can’t be cancer

Many sarcomas begin as painless lumps. It is important to seek medical advice if you notice a lump that is growing, changing or causing concern.

What Are the Signs of Sarcoma?

Sarcoma symptoms can vary depending on the type and location of the cancer. One of the most common signs is a lump that increases in size over time. While some sarcomas can cause pain, many remain painless in their early stages.

You should seek medical advice if you notice:

  • A lump that is growing
  • Persistent or unexplained pain
  • Swelling that does not improve
  • Changes around an existing lump

Although these symptoms do not necessarily indicate cancer, early assessment can be important in ensuring prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Encouraging Progress in Research

Research into sarcoma continues to grow, with Sarcoma UK investing more than £600,000 in new projects this year alone. These studies are exploring earlier diagnosis, improved treatments and better outcomes for patients, including young people and those with rare forms of sarcoma.

Recent research has also improved understanding of why some sarcomas respond to immunotherapy while others do not, helping pave the way for more personalised and effective treatments in the future.

When Can a Delayed Diagnosis Become a Clinical Negligence Claim?

Not every delayed diagnosis will amount to clinical negligence. However, if opportunities to diagnose or treat sarcoma were missed and this resulted in avoidable harm, you may be entitled to seek legal advice.

At Hatch Brenner, our specialist Clinical Negligence team supports individuals and families affected by delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. We understand the impact these situations can have and are committed to providing clear advice, compassionate support and expert legal guidance throughout the process.
