Raising awareness of hidden disability

This year’s campaign ‘See the hidden me’ focuses on the often-misunderstood symptoms of a brain injury. As part of the ABI awareness week, Headway Norfolk and Waveney launched the new podcast series HeadPods, sponsored by Hatch Brenner Solicitors, which aims to empower survivors with a hidden disability to share how it has made life more challenging, whilst also asking the general public for more understanding and respect.

The HeadPods podcast series was launched last week with an event at the Waterloo Park Pavilion in Norwich. The launch introduced the inspirational series and its presenter, Emma Martins. Emma grew up in Bawburgh near Norwich and enjoyed a successful career as a television producer working on documentaries around the world for the Discovery Channel. Unfortunately, her career was cut short when, whilst travelling in Vietnam, she caught a life-threatening viral infection which attacked her brain. Given just a 20 per cent chance of survival, Emma fought hard and recovered against all odds.

Following her recovery, Emma entered a neurological rehabilitation programme. During the process, she relearned many things most take for granted – how to walk, swim and make a cup of tea. Eight years on from her illness, Emma is living independently in Norwich and well enough to work part-time for Headway Norfolk and Waveney as a Lived Experience Communicator, however, she still has many symptoms to manage due to her brain injury. Emma is unable to see from her right eye because the left side of her brain was attacked. She struggles with hidden symptoms including short-term memory loss and can easily become fatigued and exhausted.

The HeadPods podcast series will help to raise awareness of brain injury survivors, providing them with a voice and a platform to tell their stories. It is available via the Headway Norfolk and Waveney website or on Spotify.
